HHKB Keyboard

There are a lot of people says that the HHKB is the ultimate keyboard for a coder. I don’t believe that so I bought one.

Unlike most mechanical coding keyboards, the HHKB is a capacitive keyboard. So this keyboard doesn’t have “switches”, but the overall typing experience was good. The press strength is not too high, and the key travel distance is reasonable.

My last keyboard was an Apple wired keyboard with the numeric pad which is a full-size keyboard. The good thing on using a full-size keyboard is each key has its own function and typing numbers are much more comfortable with the numeric pad. That means you don’t need to use combination keys to mimic some keys like F1 on a non-standard keyboard.

Unluckily, the HHKB is not only a full-size keyboard, but also has a super odd layout.

HHKB layout

You would notice that this keyboard does not have function keys, arrow keys, and even the “Control” key is taking the “Caps Lock” position. It is definitely that you need to spend some time to make yourself get familiar with this special layout. In the most standard keyboard, you can simply press arrow keys to move the typing cursor, however, in HHKB you will need to press Fn + other keys to achieve the same result. Sometimes when you are doing coding, you may get frustrated when you want to position your cursor.

I just received my HHKB a few days ago, and I am still trying to get used to it. I’ll write up a full experience after I wrote more codes for this keyboard.
